So many creatives…so little time to hear their stories! These, however, are a few creatives that I’ve managed to track down - stemming from my home town of Sheffield to other places beyond the Yorkshire borders.
Jacqui Hilson
Textile Artist Jacqui Hilson shares with us the sensory and visual intricacies that are involved with working with fabrics.
Pulling from her Nigerian, British, and Celtic connections, Jacqui finds a way to use her sewing machine to paint imaginative and deeply moving pieces. In her own words, ‘Art is a connector for people,’ and she looks for avenues to connect people with what she is expressing.

Faith Nicholson
Shop-owner Faith Nicholson experienced a tragic loss in her life but managed to turn it into something beautiful by doing what she loves. Her shop is a hub for nearly 200 creatives in Sheffield who can find a common space to promote their work, as well as come together in solidarity with the vast creative community in Sheffield. In her own words, “I could think of other people who have shops or online presences where it’s all about them, whereas, I would be nothing if it wasn’t for all the people that are in the shop.”
Andy Slater
Illustrator and Typographer Andy Slater is the founder of Reyt Good Illustration where he happily creates works that combine his love of music, sport, travel, and his home town of Sheffield, England.
He lets us in to his journey of becoming an artist and how quitting his 9-5 was essential to who he’s become today. He also describes the terrifying process of putting one’s work ‘out there’ for others to see, and his story is both fascinating and uplifting.
Karen Sherwood
Karen Sherwood is the founder and director of Cupola Gallery in Sheffield, England. Celebrating it’s 30th anniversary, Cupola is prestigiously known in the north of England for it’s diverse and contemporary exhibits.
Karen shares with us the behind-the-scenes story of how this gallery came into existence, including the unusual circumstances that led to the birth of it, some of the opposition she faced along the way, and the extraordinary impact it has had on the city.
